Allan Savory, The Modern Figure of Holistic Management

In an exclusive interview, Captain Forest had the privilege of discussing the pressing issue of desertification with Allan Savory, a leading figure in environmental activism. Who is Allan Savory?

Who is Allan Savory?

Allan Savory, Modern Figure of Holistic Management, President of Savory Institute

Allan Savory, President of Savory Institute, began his career in the wilds of Zimbabwe. As a research ecologist and game ranger, he witnessed firsthand the decline in biodiversity within areas slated to become national parks.

From Scientific Breakthroughs to Political Advocacy

Savory’s passion for reversing environmental decline led to a groundbreaking discovery in the 1960s. By understanding the underlying causes of biodiversity loss and desertification, he formulated innovative strategies to combat these pressing challenges.

Transitioning from scientific research to political advocacy, Savory recognized the far-reaching impacts of desertification on society. He tirelessly advocated for change, addressing issues such as poverty, social instability, and political turmoil exacerbated by environmental degradation.

Revolutionizing Resource Management

At the core of Savory’s mission is the revolutionization of resource management policies. Through the holistic management framework he developed in the early 1980s, in collaboration with over 1,000 scientists, he aims to ensure that policies effectively target the root causes of environmental degradation while minimizing unintended consequences.

A Legacy of Impact

Savory’s contributions extend beyond theory to tangible action. As a member of Parliament during Zimbabwe’s civil war, he championed opposition to the ruling party, leading to his exile in 1979.

Undeterred, he immigrated to the United States, where he co-founded the Savory Institute in 2009.

Today, the Savory Institute includes an international network of more than 50 hubs that create localized impact through their training and support of Holistic Management practitioners. The regenerating land they manage now covers 37 million hectares worldwide.

Recognitions and Achievements

Allan Savory’s impact has been widely recognized, with accolades such as the Westin A. Price Award for Integrity in Science (2015), the Buckminster Fuller Challenge (2010), and The Banksia International Award (2003). His seminal work, including the book Holistic Management: A Commonsense Revolution to Restore Our Environment, continues to inspire action and drive change on a global scale. Allan TED Talk was also recognized among the 100 best of all time in 2014.
